a) Uno elaborado por el equipo de sociólogos para detectar la percepción y el resto de las variables;

ENVIRONMENTAL DISTURBANCES IN THE RURAL AREA

ABSTRACT

The research took place in Valle del Tulúm, Province of San Juan, Argentina, during the period 2001-2002. The project objective was to determine the differences between the practices determined as objective in using agrichemicals applied to garlic plantation, and the perception that producers have about the mentioned practices. Both variables were related to variables that characterize the agrarian structure: areas, land ownership, marketing, technical and financial assistance, rationality of the productive process and health.

The conceptual framework consisted of setting up the possible relations that are often observed between the natural environment and the social environment. The referential framework includes the conception that there are two types of realities: the objective one, independent from the will of the social actors, and the subjective one, conformed by the perception that those actors have of the mentioned reality. The theoretical posture is based on the assumption that the perception changes according to the social position that people occupy as small, medium or large producers, owners or weak ownership producers.

The units of analysis were the producers and the garlic plantations. The sample was representative by the county, at random by conglomeratin and by stratum of area. The data gathering instruments were questionnaires:

a) one of the questionnaires was made by the team of sociologists in order to find the perception and the rest of the variables;

b) the other questionnaire was made by agricultural engineers that work at INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria – National Institute og Farming Technology), in order to measure the objective practice.

One of the most important findings was that 94% of the producers have the perception that their cultural practices using agrichemicals are adequate, while, objectively speaking, it was determined that 100% of their practices are inadequate.
