ABSTRACT

Identities become dynamic, transient, almost ephemeral and plural contemporary Latin American cities. Here, it intersects the old and new, colonial, modern and postmodern, the «national» with the foreign, the global and the indigenous. Can we talk, then, national identity? Can we ignore the liquidity flowing in the social relations?

In Latin American cities are crossed, as well as multiple identities, boundaries and margins geographically diffuse and a sharp division between social classes, that contribute to isolation, rejection of the «other», criticism and fear of difference. On the fringes of cities you can find country clubs, gated communities, private, exclusive, but also are the slums, favelas, poor neighborhoods, slums, «lost cities» … In short, ghettos of poverty and marginalization, where the need, hunger, informality, or directly, the absolute lack of work, were installed and threaten not to stay there forever.

What happens to those living in the shantytowns? What do they expect those who are passing daily in front of their noses the face of the need, overcrowding, hunger, misery? What do others, including for those who are outside the system? In this paper, we intend to find answers to these questions become central in times of intersection between modernity and postmodernity.
