Globalisation, Competitiveness and the Strategies of Small and Medium Size Agribusiness (Pymes) in the Region of Cuyo

ABSTRACT

In Argentina and the Region of Cuyo globalisation process has produced a significant productive transformation, while the integration in the international markets has stimulated a huge concentration of capital, bankrupt of small and medium size enterprises (Pymes) and a drastic process of unemployment and social exclusion.

In the Region of Cuyo (provinces of Mendoza and San Juan) the Pymes have historically been the engine for the economy to growth, contributing to a high rate of employment and incomes. Given the emergence of globalisation process, which has produced an specialised development within local economies, this research attempts to study the particular strategies carried out by Pymes to produce, commercialise and adopt new technologies in order to be competitive in this new scenario.

This paper concentrates on the manner by which Pymes have participated and integrated into the new agrofood regime (production of fruits, vegetables, wine and olive-oil). The theoretical and methodological framework is based in two approaches: the perspective of ‘productive chains’ and the ‘school of regulation’. Both approaches let us understand the way by which Pymes face new competitive conditions.

At the present, the value adding process and productive chains in each agribusiness are being studied, while the impact of devaluation policies on Pymes participation in the local, national and international markets is being considered.
