ABSTRACT

Numerous works have been published in the last years on the progressive aspects that Catholicism might have had in the baroque period (17th and 18th centuries) of Latin American history, especially on the socalled baroque ethos: the collectivist mentality, akin to solidarity and fraternity. This form of popular religiosity has also fostered collectivist, antiliberal, and anticosmopolitan tendencies in the mentality of the Andean region. It has also paved the way for present populism with its stress on the paternalism of the elites and the infantilism of the masses.

Keywords: Andean countries, baroque ethos, Catholic Church, Liberation Theology, Movement into Socialism (MAS), populism.
